FBI Director Steps Down
FBI Director Christopher Wray has announced his resignation as he prepares to step down from his position, following word from President-elect Donald Trump that he intends to replace Wray with Kash Patel.

Wray shared the news during an all-staff town hall on Wednesday.

Nominated by Trump in 2017, Wray took the helm of the FBI after the dismissal of then-director James Comey, who was let go amid the ‘Russiagate’ controversy.

The timing of Wray's resignation coincides with a letter from Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, which accused him of mismanagement and a “failure to take control of the FBI,” sent just two days earlier.

Earlier this month, Trump, having secured a second term in November, appointed Patel as his choice to lead the bureau in the upcoming administration. This move has faced opposition from Democrats, who argue that Wray still had years remaining in his term.

Under a law enacted by Congress after the tenure of the FBI's founding head, J. Edgar Hoover, who led the bureau for 48 years, directors can serve for up to ten years.

Despite being a registered Republican and a Trump appointee, Wray faced criticism from the incoming president for what Trump perceived as his acquiescence to the Biden administration over the last four years.

“He invaded my home,” Trump stated in an interview with NBC’s *Meet the Press*, referring to the FBI's raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in 2022.

“I can’t say I’m thrilled” about the FBI, Trump remarked, also referencing Wray's congressional testimony in which he described being struck by shrapnel rather than an assassin's bullet last July.
