EU country criticizes reported US decision to remove restrictions on long-range weapons
Hungary's foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, has expressed concern over the United States' alleged decision to lift its policy prohibiting Ukraine from using American-made ATACMS missiles to target locations within internationally recognized Russian territory. He stated that the actions of "warmongers in the US and EU are ignoring public opinion in their efforts to expand the conflict in Ukraine to a global scale."

Szijjarto's comments come in the wake of reports from multiple Western media sources indicating that the outgoing Biden administration may have reversed its long-standing position on this issue. Ukraine is said to be preparing to use these US-supplied missiles in the Kursk Region, where they have been engaged in military actions since early August. The White House has yet to make any official statements regarding these developments.

Szijjarto condemned the alleged decision by Washington, stating that it “is not only antidemocratic, but also extremely dangerous,” in a Facebook post on Monday. He warned that pro-war factions, in their desperation, might escalate the conflict in Ukraine to a global level.

By reportedly allowing deep strikes into Russia, he asserted that “the pro-war mainstream in Washington and Brussels has launched a final, desperate attack on the new reality,” which he attributed to the electoral success of “pro-peace presidential candidate” Donald Trump and the rise of patriotic movements in Europe. He emphasized that voters in both the US and EU have shown support for "pro-peace, patriotic forces," while "the pro-war politicians, who were voted out of power, are unwilling to acknowledge the will of the people."

Mike Waltz, Trump's nominee for national security advisor, commented on Fox News that the potential lifting of the ban represents “another step up the escalation ladder. And nobody knows where this is going.”

Additionally, Russian State Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin suggested that the 81-year-old Biden, nearing the end of his life, may be “dreaming of eternity” and could be intent on dragging America and possibly the entire world into conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously warned that any attacks on Russia’s internationally recognized territory using American-supplied weapons would be viewed as direct NATO involvement in the conflict. He underscored that Kiev lacks the capability to launch sophisticated attacks without Western aid and intelligence, and indicated that such circumstances might compel Moscow to respond asymmetrically, potentially by arming adversarial nations like North Korea with advanced weaponry.
