Elon Musk and Edward Snowden Criticize the Detainment of Telegram's CEO
Elon Musk and Edward Snowden have expressed significant dissent regarding the recent detention of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, underscoring their worries about free speech and individual freedoms.
Musk shared his views on his social media platform, X, adopting the hashtag #FreePavel and stressing the need to safeguard free speech in contemporary democracies. Snowden remarked that the arrest represents an "assault on basic human rights" and accused French President Emmanuel Macron of employing dubious methods to access private communications.
Durov, the wealthy founder of the encrypted messaging app Telegram, was taken into custody at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday evening after arriving on a private jet from Azerbaijan. French authorities had issued a warrant, alleging that he failed to prevent unlawful activities on Telegram, including cyberbullying, the spread of child exploitation content, and the glorification of terrorism.
Telegram has asserted that it adheres to EU regulations and contends that it is unfair to hold Durov accountable for the actions of its users.
The arrest has triggered significant outrage, particularly in Russia, where Durov—who possesses dual French and UAE citizenship—is regarded as a political prisoner. Russian officials have requested access to him, with some arguing that the West is leveraging Durov in a larger political scheme.
Founded in 2013 by Durov after he left Russia due to government pressure, Telegram now boasts nearly 1 billion users worldwide and remains a vital communication tool, particularly in conflict areas like the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
