On January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck loaded with fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel erupted outside the hotel. Master Sgt. Matthew Livelsberger, 37, was found dead in the vehicle. The incident resulted in minor injuries for seven bystanders and left the hotel with minimal damage, subsequently raising concerns among federal investigators regarding the potential for terrorism.
Las Vegas police released the letters on Friday, which portray Livelsberger’s considerable frustration with societal problems and his inner turmoil. In one of his notes, he expressed, “I needed to cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took.”
Livelsberger emphasized that the explosion was meant to grab attention, asserting, “This was not a terrorist attack, it was a wake up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives?” He further criticized the state of the nation, stating, “We are the United States of America, the best country people to ever exist! But right now we are terminally ill and headed toward collapse.”
In his letters, he listed a series of societal issues he believed required urgent attention, including problems related to processed foods, obesity, income inequality, homelessness, weak leadership, a lack of masculinity, and blatant corruption. He wrote, “Stop obsessing over diversity. We are all diverse and DEI is a cancer,” and remarked, “thankfully, we rejected the DEI candidate and will have a real President instead of Weekend at Bernie’s.”
Livelsberger also expressed strong views on foreign policy, stating, “We must end the war in Ukraine with a negotiated settlement. It is the only way,” while adding a concerning perspective on military readiness: “our population is too fat to join the military, yet we are facing a war with China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran before 2030."
His second letter was directed towards fellow servicemembers, veterans, militias, and all Americans, urging them to prevent Democrats from blocking Trump’s potential rise to power and “purging” the nation of its alleged issues. He wrote, “We are being led by weak and feckless leadership who only serve to enrich themselves. Try peaceful means first, but be prepared to fight to get the Dems out of the federal government and military by any means necessary. They all must go, and a hard reset must occur for our country to avoid collapse.”
Livelsberger, who had numerous deployments to conflict zones such as Afghanistan and Ukraine, was a well-decorated member of the Special Forces with multiple commendations. Reports indicate that he had been grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder and personal challenges, including a recent separation from his wife.
Ultimately, Livelsberger reportedly took his own life with a gunshot before setting off the explosion. While investigators are scrutinizing the letters, they caution against interpreting them as offering a definitive motive for his actions.
