China's Premier Comic and Animation Award Winners Announced in Guangzhou
The 17th China International Comics Festival launched on Wednesday in Guangzhou, located in south China's Guangdong Province. The event drew hundreds of ACG IP, over 1,000 cosplayers, and more than 10,000 animation aficionados.

During the opening ceremony, the winners of the 21st China Animation & Comic Competition Golden Dragon Award were revealed.

A total of 51 awards were distributed, with the most eagerly awaited honors for both comics and animation going to works originating from Guangdong. Chu Wu received the Best Story Comic Award, telling the adventurous tale of a food delivery worker who journeys into another world. The Best Animated Feature Film Award was presented to Luo Fanchen, which features a fantasy narrative centered on a descendant of China’s classic mythological figures—the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.

Japanese artist Fujimoto Tatsuki was honored with the Overseas Animation & Comic Award for his comic work Goodbye, Eri. This year’s Golden Dragon Award competition saw a record-breaking 800 submissions from overseas.

In a bid to inspire local artists to portray the allure of Chinese stories, the committee introduced The Best Splendid China Special Award for the first time this year. Pieces showcasing Chinese cultural heritage, such as lion dance and the Silk Road, received nominations.

The inaugural CACC Golden Dragon Award was established in 2004. Recognized as the official competition of the CICF, it is often considered the "Chinese Academy Award for animation and comics."

According to Xinhua, the total output value of China's animation industry has surged in recent years, climbing from 88.2 billion yuan in 2013 to 221.2 billion yuan in 2020.
