China convenes summit to enhance applications of the BeiDou navigation system
The 3rd International Summit on BDS (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) applications commenced on Thursday in Zhuzhou, located in central China's Hunan Province. The event seeks to enhance the industry by broadening application opportunities and fostering international collaboration.
This two-day event drew over 1,800 participants, including researchers, entrepreneurs, and officials from China and around the world. Various exhibitors showcased BDS applications spanning multiple sectors, such as smart logistics and intelligent transportation.
"BDS applications are rapidly expanding across key sectors of China's national economy, with coverage rates surpassing 90 percent in areas such as transportation, energy, natural resources and emergency response," stated Xiang Libin, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission and an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
During the opening ceremony, a bluebook detailing the development of the BeiDou industry was also published.
"BDS services and related products have been exported to more than 130 countries, providing users with diversified choices and better application experience and promoting industrial development," according to the document.
The development of the Chinese-made BDS began in 1994, with the completion of BDS-1 and BDS-2 in 2000 and 2012, respectively. Following the successful launch of BDS-3 on July 31, 2020, China became the third nation to possess an independent global navigation satellite system.
As reported in the White Paper on the Development of China's Satellite Navigation and Location Services Industry, the total output value of China's satellite navigation and location services industry reached 536.2 billion yuan in 2023, reflecting a 7.09 percent increase from the previous year.
