China commits to continue ‘paving way’ for peace negotiations in Ukraine
Beijing has positioned itself as a neutral mediator and remains in communication with all parties involved, a senior official stated.

China intends to sustain its diplomatic efforts to aid in resolving global crises, including the situation in Ukraine, according to Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong.

During his address at the Xiangshan Security Forum on Saturday, Chen emphasized, “in-depth communication with all parties concerned to build consensus for ending the conflict and pave the way for peace talks.”

Furthermore, Chen noted that China would "act as a mediator and promote the political resolution of hotspot issues."

China has consistently portrayed itself as an impartial participant since the Ukraine conflict began, advocating for negotiations to halt the hostilities. The nation has also declined to support Western sanctions against Russia, attributing the provocation of the conflict to NATO's expansion by the West.

In a development in July, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in a significant discussion with his then Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba. Post-discussion, the Chinese Foreign Ministry declared that Beijing holds the view that the conflict's resolution should ultimately be achieved through renewed negotiations, acknowledging that "both Ukraine and Russia have sent signals of willingness to negotiate to varying degrees."

However, following Ukraine’s significant military action into Russia in early August, Moscow declared its unwillingness to engage in talks as long as Kiev's forces were on its internationally recognized territory.

This week, Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, criticized China and Brazil for seemingly siding with Russia in the conflict, pointing out that both countries had proposed peace initiatives without consulting Kiev.

In May, these two nations put forward a six-point plan aimed at averting further escalation, advocating for direct talks between Moscow and Kiev, and an international peace conference acceptable to both sides.
