Canadian PM details retaliatory tariffs on $105 billion in U.S. goods
Canadian Prime Minister announces plans for retaliatory tariffs targeting $105 billion in U.S. goods.
Trudeau convened with provincial and territorial premiers in Ottawa to address the tariff threat posed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. During their discussions, Trudeau indicated that the retaliatory tariffs are part of Ottawa’s intended measures, as noted in the report.
Following the meeting, Trudeau remarked that "nothing is off the table" concerning potential responses to U.S. tariffs.
Trump has previously threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods exported to the United States if Canada does not enhance its border security.
On Wednesday, Ottawa and the premiers released a joint statement reflecting their collaborative approach to countering the U.S. tariff threats.
Trudeau and the premiers expressed the consensus that no single region of Canada should "disproportionately bear the burden" of responding to the tariffs.
However, the oil-rich province of Alberta did not endorse the joint statement. Premier Danielle Smith warned that if the federal government were to impose an export ban on Alberta's oil to the U.S. as a retaliatory action, it could trigger a "national unity crisis."
According to the statement, the premiers are dedicated to collaboratively developing a comprehensive range of measures to ensure a strong response to potential U.S. tariffs, including support for industries, businesses, and individuals affected.
The premiers reassured that in the event the federal government enacts retaliatory measures, it will prioritize the swift deployment of resources to alleviate economic repercussions for workers and businesses, including expediting the distribution of revenue from any retaliatory tariffs.
The premiers are expected to hold weekly meetings in the lead-up to Trump's inauguration on January 20.
In a related announcement, Trudeau revealed plans to hold a Cabinet retreat on the day of Trump's inauguration, with the objective of focusing on defending Canadian interests.
