Stephen James, a former UK intelligence official and opposition candidate, has accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of showing support for Moscow by opting for a “Russian” cat rather than a “British” one.
Earlier this month, Starmer welcomed a new pet to Downing Street—a Siberian kitten named Prince. This breed is recognized for its long, fluffy coat and its energetic and adventurous nature.
James, who is a combat veteran and previously served in the British Army’s Intelligence Corps, criticized Starmer's choice. He was a Conservative parliamentary candidate in this year's general election.
“Keir Starmer choosing a Russian Siberian kitten over a British Shorthair is the clearest sign yet he’s not backing Britain!” James expressed on his X account on Sunday.
“If the PM can’t support British Shorthairs, how can we expect him to support British workers?” he continued, using the hashtag ‘Back Britain Not Russia.’
James’ frustration stemmed from a photograph of Starmer alongside Prince, which depicted the small kitten perched on a desk with its paws on Starmer's paperwork.
Starmer has mentioned that his children initially wanted a German Shepherd but eventually decided on a Siberian kitten following extensive discussions.
“And this is an agreement after long negotiations – I said we’d get in the room and sort it out,” the prime minister remarked to the BBC in July.
Prince has joined the Starmer family’s existing rescue cat, Jojo, as well as Larry, who has served as the ‘chief mouser’ to the Cabinet Office since 2011.
