US President Joe Biden has reached out to President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his election win and to invite him to the White House for discussions regarding the transition of power.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ presidential nominee, has also reportedly contacted Trump to concede the election. She is scheduled to deliver her concession speech on Wednesday afternoon.
As the final count of votes from Tuesday’s presidential election is still ongoing, Trump has secured victories in five key battleground states – Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania – and is expected to also win Arizona and Nevada. He has already amassed at least 292 electoral college votes, in contrast to Harris's 224. A total of 270 electoral votes is required to win the presidency.
The White House informed AP that Biden’s team will coordinate a date “in the near future” with Trump’s transition staff. Additionally, Biden is set to address the nation regarding the election outcome on Thursday.
There were calls from Democrats for Biden to withdraw from the race back in July, due to concerns about his age, suggesting a substitution with Harris at the party convention. The 81-year-old president reportedly also congratulated Harris on her campaign during a call on Wednesday.
In the meantime, Harris has reached out to Trump to concede the election and congratulate him on his victory, according to a member of her staff who spoke to AP on the condition of anonymity. Harris reportedly emphasized the “importance of a peaceful transfer of power” in her discussion with Trump as she prepares for her address to the public.
