Biden Acknowledges ‘Direct Contact’ With Ukraine Regarding Kursk Attack
The President of the United States has commented for the first time regarding the advancement of Ukrainian forces into Russian territory.

President Joe Biden confirmed ongoing communications with Kiev following the movement of Ukrainian troops into Russia's Kursk Region.

Last week, according to Russian reports, Ukraine deployed thousands of troops over the border, capturing various villages and engaging in actions against civilians.

“I have spoken with my staff on a regular basis, probably every four or five hours for the last six or eight days and it’s creating a real dilemma for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin,” Biden shared with the media on Tuesday, marking his initial public statement on the situation in Kursk.

“And we’ve been in direct contact, constant contact with the Ukrainians. That’s all I’m going to say about it while it’s active,” he further added.

While addressing the media near Air Force One upon his arrival in New Orleans, Biden remained reserved about the operation. Noteworthy is that earlier that day, Josep Borrell, the EU Foreign Policy Commissioner, expressed unwavering support from the European Union for Ukraine's actions in Kursk.

Responses from Washington and Brussels to the unfolding events have consistently emphasized support for Ukraine, without delving into specifics.

“We’re in touch with our Ukrainian counterparts, and we are working to gain a better understanding of what they’re doing, what their goals are, what their strategy is, and I’m going to leave a little bit of space for us to have those conversations before I try to characterize what’s going on,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby articulated last Friday. Following Kirby's remarks, the US announced a provision of an additional $125 million in military assistance to Ukraine.

During a recent visit to Kiev, Senator Lindsey Graham lauded the Ukrainian initiative as “bold” and “beautiful” and encouraged retired Western pilots to join the Ukrainian airforce.

Reports from the region have indicated significant casualties on both sides with the ongoing conflict. Civilians have suffered, and Ukrainian troops have faced substantial losses. Some Ukrainian soldiers have explained their goals include acquiring territory for potential diplomatic negotiations and alleviating military pressure in other regions such as Donbass.

In a recent statement, Putin highlighted the escalation of Russian military engagement and a rise in enlistments driven by the conflict.
