Prosecutors in France have indicated that the suspect is aligned with Islamic State ideology and had been working on a plan for “violent action” aimed at a football stadium or shopping center in the country.
The man was apprehended early on Tuesday in the Occitanie region of southwestern France, alongside two other suspects, all of whom are of Afghan descent. They were taken to Paris for interrogation, but two of them have since been released.
The detained suspect, who reportedly hails from a Tajik community in Afghanistan and has lived in France for about three years, had been discussing his intentions on Telegram. His identity has not been made public.
The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) claims to have found evidence indicating that the detainee had become radicalized and subscribed to “the ideology of the Islamic State.” He has been charged with terrorist criminal association and remains in provisional detention.
In addition, the agency informed AFP that this case has “links” to the arrest of an Afghan migrant in the US last Monday. That suspect, 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, has been living in the US since 2021 and is currently awaiting a decision on his immigration status.
US prosecutors stated that Tawhedi and his unnamed co-conspirators, all believed to be followers of Islamic State, had taken measures to execute a terrorist attack in the US on election day. Evidence revealed that Tawhedi frequently accessed Islamist propaganda and donated approximately $540 in cryptocurrency to a charity in Syria that allegedly supports the Islamic State. He was also reportedly in contact with a Telegram user identified by the FBI as an Islamic State recruiter.
A source connected to the French investigation noted that US authorities had shared information about the Tawhedi case with their French counterparts, which led to the arrests in Occitanie. Details regarding the suspect's plans in France and the connections between the US and French investigations have not been disclosed.
On Tuesday, the US Justice Department announced charges against Tawhedi, accusing him of conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State and intending to commit an act of terrorism.
