US House Speaker Insists Zelensky Dismiss Ukrainian Ambassador
Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, has urged Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to dismiss Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, citing her alleged interference in American elections.

In a letter addressed to Zelensky on Wednesday, Johnson stated, “I demand that you immediately fire Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova.” The prominent Republican highlighted that Markarova had coordinated an event on Sunday in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where Zelensky toured a facility that manufactures artillery shells to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Johnson criticized the choice of location for the event, noting that it took place in a politically contested battleground state and was organized by a key political supporter of Kamala Harris, adding, “The tour was clearly a partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference.” He emphasized that no Republicans were invited to the event, which he denounced as intentional.

The Louisiana Republican expressed that his party has lost confidence in Markarova’s capacity to represent Ukraine in the US and argued that she “should be removed from her post immediately.” Despite bipartisan support for Ukraine against Russia, Johnson remarked that “our relationship is unnecessarily tested and needlessly tarnished” by negative comments about Republican candidates from Zelensky and other officials in Kiev.

Johnson urged Zelensky to take "immediate action" to prevent such incidents from happening again. His letter follows calls from several Republican lawmakers for a congressional investigation into Zelensky’s visit, accusing Democrats of misusing military resources—specifically the aircraft that transported the Ukrainian leader to Pennsylvania—to unfairly assist Harris in her presidential bid.

In a related matter, Zelensky expressed criticism of former President Trump in an interview with New Yorker magazine published on Sunday, stating Trump “doesn’t really know how to stop the war.” He also described Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as “too radical” and rejected a ceasefire proposal Vance had outlined as “an awful idea.”

Earlier this month, Vance proposed a plan that would establish a heavily fortified demilitarized zone along the current front lines, require Ukraine to abandon its NATO ambitions, and secure reconstruction funding from the EU. In contrast, Zelensky has maintained that lasting peace can only be achieved if Ukraine regains all territories it claims, including Crimea and four regions that recently held votes to join Russia. Moscow has deemed their status as non-negotiable and has dismissed Zelensky’s claims as unrealistic.
