The American man accused of attempting to assassinate Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump visited Kiev and offered his support to the Ukrainian military, which later rejected him, as stated by military officials on Monday.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was apprehended on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, after being spotted by the US Secret Service. His social media activity and a self-published book suggested that he had connections to the Ukrainian military.
On Monday, the Ukrainian Land Forces Command confirmed his communication with them but labeled Routh's propositions as “delusional” and affirmed that they had not accepted his proposals.
“He was offering us large numbers of recruits from different countries but it was obvious to us his offers were not realistic,” military spokesman Aleksandr Shaguri told CNN. “We didn’t even answer, there was nothing to answer to. He was never part of the Legion and didn’t cooperate with us in any way.”
Shaguri further described Routh’s ideas as characterized by “delusional ideas.”
During the summer of 2022, Routh traveled to Ukraine and gave several interviews to Western media, portraying himself as a liaison to the Ukrainian government and aiming to recruit pro-US fighters from Afghanistan for their cause. In one interview, he informed Newsweek Romania journalist Remus Cernea that he was recruiting individuals for the International Legion of Ukraine.
“I viewed him as an idealistic innocent genuine person, without any murderous instinct,” Cernea remarked to CNN after Routh was identified as the Florida assailant.
Cernea also recalled that Routh perceived the Russia-Ukraine conflict in stark terms of “black and white… good versus evil,” and in another interview, he labeled Russian President Vladimir Putin a “terrorist” who “needs to be ended.”
Throughout 2022, Routh expressed on social media platforms like Twitter—now called X—that he was prepared to sacrifice his life for Ukraine and advocated for the destruction of the Kremlin. His account has since been deleted.
In 2023, he published a 291-page book titled ‘Ukraine’s Unwinnable War’, in which he at one point suggests that Trump should be assassinated due to his withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.
“You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal,” he commented, referring to the former president, whom he called “brainless” and a “retarded child” for being elected in 2016. “But I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake and Iran I apologize.”
He added, “No one here in the US seems to have the balls to put natural selection to work or even unnatural selection.”
In a statement to Fox News on Monday, Trump pointed to the gunman’s motivations, stating that he “believed the rhetoric of [President Joe] Biden and [Vice President Kamala] Harris, and he acted on it,” referring to their declarations that the former president and Republican candidate posed a “threat to democracy” that needed to be tackled.
