Tucker Carlson Tells RFK Jr That Durov's Arrest Is a ‘Hallmark of Dictatorship’
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was detained in France last week after his private jet arrived in Paris. American journalist Tucker Carlson commented on Durov's arrest, stating that it, along with encouragement from the US administration, reflects “the hallmark of dictatorship.” This remark was made during an interview with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has recently paused his campaign as an independent candidate for the US presidency.

According to French authorities, Durov is being held for questioning related to an extensive cybercrime investigation into illicit activities associated with his end-to-end encrypted social media platform. Telegram is known for its policy of not sharing user data or chat logs with law enforcement, and Durov has asserted that this commitment to privacy has attracted scrutiny from intelligence agencies globally.

During the interview, Kennedy emphasized the importance of the First Amendment, arguing that it should protect not only legitimate information but also “misinformation” and viewpoints that may be unpopular. Carlson added that the Biden administration views any criticism of its actions as misinformation. He stated, “With that in mind, you see the Biden administration encouraging France, [French President Emmanuel] Macron to arrest the owner and founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, who is, as of now, in a French prison,” and noted, “that’s the hallmark of dictatorship.”

Kennedy responded by lamenting that “We’ve lost Europe,” asserting that it currently lacks free speech. He further compared Durov to Elon Musk, criticizing the Democratic Party for its departure from democratic principles. “Elon Musk should be the hero of the Democratic Party,” he declared, adding that Musk is “now become a villain because of it” for allowing free speech on his platform.

Tatyana Moskalkova, Russia’s leading human rights official, described Durov’s arrest as a setback for free speech, asserting that it represents “an attempt to shut down Telegram, the platform where you can find the truth about world affairs.”

In its official response to Durov's detention, Telegram stated that it adheres to EU laws and that its content moderation policies align with industry standards.
