Trump Jr.'s response came after Zelensky's interview with the New Yorker on Monday, prior to his trip to the US. In the interview, Zelensky characterized Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, as “too radical” concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also implied that Donald Trump “doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how.”
Vance has maintained that the conflict is not critical to US interests and that Ukraine will eventually need to compromise with Russia for a resolution. Donald Trump has consistently asserted that if he were re-elected, he could end the Ukraine conflict in just 24 hours.
”So a foreign leader who has received billions of dollars in funding from American taxpayers, comes to our country and has the nerve to attack the GOP ticket for President? And he does this right after a pro-Ukraine zealot tried to assassinate my father? Disgraceful!” Trump Jr. wrote in a post on X.
His comments appeared to reference Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old alleged assailant in a recent attempt to shoot Donald Trump at his golf course in Florida. Routh is known as a vocal supporter of Ukraine and has a criminal record, having granted several interviews to Western media while in Kiev.
Zelensky's visit to the US is intended to coincide with his attendance at the UN, where he plans to advocate for his ‘victory plan,’ a strategy designed to defeat Russia with Western assistance. He is expected to present this plan to President Joe Biden and both major presidential candidates—Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
On the same day, Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro gave Zelensky a tour of a munitions plant near Scranton, where he signed artillery shells destined for Ukrainian forces.
“We must all do our part in the fight for freedom — from the workers in Scranton who make Pennsylvania the arsenal of democracy to the brave Ukrainian soldiers protecting their country. We stand with Ukraine in their just defense of their homeland in the face of Russian…” Shapiro stated.
Moscow perceives the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war provoked by the US, claiming that Ukrainian troops are being utilized as ‘cannon fodder’ with the support of their government.
