US President Donald Trump has tasked Keith Kellogg with leading negotiations with Kiev. Previously, media sources indicated that the retired lieutenant general was ousted from peace talks with Russia at the request of Moscow.
“I am pleased to inform you that General Keith Kellogg has been appointed Special Envoy to Ukraine,” Trump announced on Truth Social on Saturday. He specified that Kellogg would be responsible for direct negotiations with Ukraine’s Zelensky and other senior officials. “He [Kellogg] knows them well, and they have a very good working relationship together,” Trump noted.
According to reports from NBC News and Reuters on Thursday, Russian officials requested that Kellogg be excluded from peace discussions due to his pro-Kiev stance.
The retired US Army lieutenant general did not participate in last month’s Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia or this week’s US-Ukraine discussions in Jeddah, where delegations proposed a 30-day ceasefire.
On Thursday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow to formally present the initiative's details to Russian officials. Trump described Witkoff’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very good and productive.”
Putin showed support for a possible 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict but expressed concerns regarding its implementation. He also offered Ukrainian forces encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region an opportunity to surrender, ensuring them their lives and dignified treatment.
In relation to Moscow-Washington ties, the Russian president recognized the Trump administration's efforts to mend the relationship but noted that the process remains difficult. “We know the new administration, headed by President Trump, is doing everything to restore at least part of what was practically reduced to zero, destroyed by the previous American administration,” Putin remarked.
