During his presidency, Trump met the late monarch on two occasions. The first was in 2018 when she hosted him and his wife for tea in a casual setting. The following year, he was welcomed at a formal state banquet. At that time, various observers noted that Trump appeared to breach royal protocol multiple times.
The Daily Mail reported that Trump, 78, claimed, “President Trump was my favorite president,” citing what he alleged were the Queen's words to his friends.
Trump described his interactions with the Queen as “great” and “unbelievable,” stating, “She liked me and I liked her,” and reminisced about spending “hours together at a state dinner.”
He accused Brown of deliberately tarnishing his reputation with “totally false” claims to promote his biography.
The book contends that Queen Elizabeth II found Trump “very rude” and mentioned to another guest that she had “particularly disliked” his tendency to look over her shoulder, seemingly in search of someone more engaging. Additionally, it suggests that she thought Trump “must have some sort of arrangement” with his wife Melania, questioned why she would remain married to him otherwise.
In July 2018, Trump and the First Lady had tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle near the end of his UK visit. He later labeled her a “fantastic woman… smart and sharp [with] so much energy.”
However, several instances highlighted by observers indicated instances of etiquette breaches. Trump did not greet the Queen correctly by bowing, and Melania also did not perform the expected “small curtsy.” While not strictly enforced, such gestures are considered courteous during visits with the royal family.
During their meeting, Trump further appeared to disrespect royal protocol by walking ahead of the Queen and turning his back to her while examining the royal guard, both actions interpreted as impolite.
