Trump calls for the 'immediate' closure of the Education Department
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the immediate closure of the Education Department.

"I'd like it to be closed immediately," Trump stated during a session with reporters in the White House Oval Office. "The Department of Education's a big con job."

He pointed out, "So they ranked the top 40 countries in the world. We're ranked number 40th. But we're ranked No. 1 in one department – cost per pupil. So, we spend more per pupil than any other country in the world."

This isn't the first time Trump has voiced intentions to abolish the Education Department; he aims to return education responsibilities back to the states. During his initial term, he included shutting down the department in his proposed agenda to diminish the federal government's size and functions.

The Education Department employs 4,245 individuals and had expenditures totaling $251 billion in the last fiscal year, as reported by Reuters. Halting the department's operations could jeopardize billions in aid for students ranging from kindergarten through high school, as well as financial support for college tuition.

Since his inauguration on January 20, Trump has been advocating for extensive reforms within the federal government, which includes significant workforce reductions and allowing the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, to access key payment systems across various agencies.

In addition to the Education Department, Trump has sought to eliminate other agencies, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, asserting they are plagued by "tremendous fraud" and "unprecedented levels of corruption."

It's important to note that closing both USAID and the Education Department would require Congressional approval.
