Tropical Storm Ileana Hits Mexico's Sinaloa Coast
Tropical Storm Ileana hit the Sinaloa coast on Saturday, affecting the popular tourist region of Los Cabos the day before. The storm, which originated off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Thursday, reached land with winds of up to 40 miles per hour, as reported by the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The storm made its way ashore near Topolobampo and was later positioned approximately 15 miles south-southeast of Los Mochis by Saturday evening.

The forecast suggests that Ileana will continue to affect the northern coastal areas of Sinaloa for a few hours before advancing over the Gulf of California, traveling parallel to the shoreline on Sunday, and subsequently weakening into a tropical depression.

Previously, on Friday, the Baja California Peninsula had been under storm warnings, impacting areas including Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Regarding local responses, Juan Manuel Arce Ortega from Los Cabos Civil Protection mentioned, "the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos had suspended classes in schools due to the storm."

Moreover, Los Cabos Civil Protection coordinated the setup of 20 temporary shelters in the cities of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Alan Galvan, who works at the Hacienda Beach Club and Residences in Cabo San Lucas, described the ongoing weather conditions. "The rain isn't very strong right now, but the waves are choppy," he observed. He also noted, "The guests are very calm and already came down for coffee," and mentioned, "There's some flights canceled, but everything is okay at the moment."

On Friday, persistent rainfall led to flooded roads and precautionary measures like sandbagging at some resorts in Los Cabos. Despite the conditions, locals were seen navigating the marina areas with umbrellas.

Emphasizing the importance of safety, Lyzzette Liceaga, a tour operator based in Los Cabos, stated, "The priority has to be safety, starting with the workers. We always have to check on our colleagues who live in risk areas."

On a broader scale, Ileana stood out as the sole active tropical storm in the Eastern Pacific area tracked by the National Weather Service on Friday. Meanwhile, the Atlantic saw activity from the post-tropical cyclone Francine and the newly formed Tropical Storm Gordon, which was expected to stay predominantly over open waters in the following days.
