Celebrations were held across the country, with significant gatherings in Tehran’s Azadi Square and in various other cities. In a statement preceding the festivities, the Foreign Ministry highlighted the importance of collective participation in showcasing national unity and independence.
February 10 commemorates the pivotal moment in 1979 when the US-backed rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown, paving the way for the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The revolution, spearheaded by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, brought about considerable changes in Iran’s domestic and international policies, including a halt to relations with the US and a shift towards closer ties with regional partners. The aftermath of the revolution has seen Iran's relations with Western nations deteriorate, leading to a series of sanctions aimed at limiting the country’s nuclear ambitions and influence in the region.
On Monday, demonstrators in Tehran took to the streets, brandishing flags and chanting slogans. Many carried banners featuring images of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alongside General Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed in a US drone strike in 2020.
According to the Tasnim news agency, celebrations occurred in over 1,400 cities and towns as well as in 38,000 villages across Iran. Additionally, hundreds of foreign guests reportedly traveled to Iran to join in the festivities.
“The February 10 Rally is a manifestation of the unity and harmony of the Iranian people and a reflection of the national will to safeguard the precious legacy of independence, freedom, democracy, and security, which has been achieved through the sacrifices and dedication of the noblest sons of this land,” said the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
The Ministry also noted that in the past 46 years, Iran has faced a multitude of challenges, including an "imposed" eight-year war with Iraq, terrorism, sabotage, foreign interventions, unjust sanctions, and various political and economic pressures.
In spite of these adversities, Tehran has prioritized self-reliance and cooperation with other nations, proclaiming Monday's rally as a representation of national resilience. The Foreign Ministry asserted that Iran has staunchly protected its independence in the face of external challenges.
Russia has emerged as a crucial ally, with President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently signing a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty aimed at enhancing economic and military collaboration. This agreement between the two BRICS nations encompasses trade, military cooperation, science, education, and cultural exchanges, reinforcing their bilateral relationship amid pressure from Western nations.
