Starbucks Seeks Trademark Registration in Russia, Reports Media
The US multinational corporation withdrew from the country following the eruption of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

US coffeehouse chain Starbucks has applied to Russia’s intellectual property service, Rospatent, to register several trademarks in the nation, as reported by Vedomosti newspaper on Tuesday.

Having been active in Russia since 2007, Starbucks left the country in 2022 due to sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict. The Seattle-based company is now seeking to register eight brands in Russia, encompassing Starbucks, Starbucks coffee, and frappuccino. The request, filed recently, pertains to beverage and food production, instant coffee sales, and managing a customer loyalty program.

This move by Starbucks is thought to be a proactive step to secure the option of repurchasing its former business in Russia.

Starbucks’ past operations in Russia were rebranded as “Stars Coffee” following the acquisition of all Russian assets by Russian rapper and entrepreneur Timati (Timur Yunusov) in collaboration with businessman Anton Pinsky during the summer of 2022. Pinsky and Yunusov took over rental agreements for all 130 Starbucks coffee outlets in Russia, as well as the contracts of 2,000 employees. As part of the rebranding process, the iconic mermaid image in the logo was replaced with a girl wearing a traditional Russian ‘kokoshnik’ headdress.

In the years 2022 and 2023, Pinsky made attempts to register fresh brand names – Stars Pinskiy Coffee and Stars Kanokov Coffee. However, Rospatent dismissed the application, citing similarities that could lead to confusion with the Starbucks brands.
