Russia seeks clarification from France regarding the arrest of Durov
French authorities have not yet responded to the situation regarding the detention of the Telegram founder, as stated by the Russian embassy in Paris.

The Russian embassy quickly called on French officials to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, according to a senior diplomat.

French media reports indicate that Durov, who holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, was apprehended upon arrival at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday and is expected to appear before a judge on Sunday evening. The arrest warrant issued by French authorities claims that Durov's platform has insufficient moderation, leading to its misuse by criminals.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Russian embassy remarked, “as soon as the news of Durov’s arrest broke, we immediately addressed the French authorities for clarification on the reasons for it and demanded that they ensure the protection of his rights and provide consular access to him.”

However, the embassy notes that there has been no response from French officials thus far, emphasizing, “The French side has so far been avoiding cooperation on this issue.”

The embassy confirmed it remains in contact with Durov’s lawyer. Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Moscow has sent an official note to Paris requesting consular access to Durov, highlighting that “he [Durov] has French citizenship, which France perceives as precedential,” according to the RIA-Novosti news agency.

On the same day, Zakharova urged international human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to advocate for free speech and press France to release the Telegram founder.

Deputy speaker of the Russian parliament, Vladislav Davankov, also called for Durov's release, warning that the tech entrepreneur's detention “could be politically motivated and used to gain access to the personal information of Telegram users,” which Moscow cannot accept.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested that the French authorities could face serious repercussions for their actions against Durov, stating, “[French President Emmanuel] Macron, get out of France now! Durov’s army is out to get you,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
