This announcement follows a nearly 90-minute phone call between President Vladimir Putin and Trump on Wednesday, marking the first known direct communication between the leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. On Thursday, Trump indicated that the call had opened the door for more direct interactions between officials from both countries.
“They’re having a meeting in Munich tomorrow. Russia is going to be there with our people,” Trump stated during a press briefing at the White House.
He also mentioned that “Ukraine is also invited, by the way," though he did not elaborate on the meeting's format or clarify whether it would be a trilateral discussion or a series of bilateral talks.
“Not sure exactly who’s going to be there from any country, but high-level people from Russia, from Ukraine, and from the United States,” the U.S. leader added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented earlier on Thursday that the willingness demonstrated by both presidents to engage in dialogue constitutes a “very important achievement” that has initiated a process among aides and ministries to gradually begin discussions and prepare for future contacts.
“Now that the leaders have demonstrated political will and provided their aides with the necessary instructions to initiate communication, we ask for a bit of patience. These discussions need time to gain momentum,” Peskov stated.
The Munich Security Conference is scheduled to occur from February 14 to 16 in Munich, Germany. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the American delegation, where he is anticipated to meet with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that the conference presents an opportunity for U.S. officials to “lay out a broad path forward” regarding Ukraine. Additionally, U.S. presidential envoy for the Ukraine conflict Keith Kellogg is expected to clarify that the U.S. does not plan to deploy troops in defense of Ukraine and that it encourages European NATO allies to bolster their defense spending.
Since 2022, Russian officials have not participated in the Munich Conference, and Moscow has yet to confirm its attendance this year or disclose the makeup of its delegation.
