Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering whether to conclude his third-party presidential campaign and support Donald Trump, as revealed by his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, on Tuesday.
With his campaign facing challenges in getting on the ballot in several crucial states and struggling financially, Shanahan shared on the Impact Theory podcast that Kennedy is at a pivotal moment.
“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and [Tim] Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump,” she stated.
“Or we walk away, right now, and join forces with Donald Trump…and we explain to our base why we’re making this decision,” she elaborated, emphasizing that this decision is “not easy.”
Kennedy made his announcement last October to run for the presidency as an independent candidate, stepping away from his attempt to challenge President Joe Biden in the primary elections of the Democratic Party.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who took Biden’s spot at the top of the Democratic ticket last month, generally outperforms Trump in polls that include Kennedy, indicating that Kennedy’s ongoing campaign presents a greater risk to Republicans. A combination of various polls gathered by RealClearPolitics currently shows Harris leading Trump with 46.4% to 44.9%, while Kennedy is capturing 4.5% of the vote along with Jill Stein from the Green party at 1%.
In a social media update on Tuesday, Kennedy declared his willingness to "talk with leaders of any political party to further the goals I have served for 40 years in my career and in this campaign."
Among these goals, he mentioned “reversing the chronic disease epidemic, ending the war machine, cleaning corporate influence out of government and toxic pollution out of the environment, protecting freedom of speech, and ending politicization of enforcement agencies.”
Kennedy’s advocacy for free speech and his stance against foreign wars align with Trump’s views, as the former president has also expressed concerns about Biden's alleged “weaponization” of the justice system against him. While Kennedy has had discussions with both Trump and Harris about potential endorsements, Shanahan expressed a preference for Trump’s vision for the nation.
“If we are splitting hairs, I would say that I trust the future of this county more under the leadership of Trump and the [Peter] Thiels and the J.D. Vances than I do right now under Harris and the Reid Hoffmans,” she remarked, referencing notable donors from both the Republican and Democratic parties in Silicon Valley.
In a leaked phone conversation from last month, Trump encouraged Kennedy to endorse his campaign, asserting that “it would be so good for you.”
