Pope advises American Catholics to pick the 'lesser of two evils'
According to the pontiff, Catholics face a choice between the "lesser evil" of pro-abortion Harris and the anti-migrant Trump. Read Full Article at RT.com.
During his conversation with the press corps aboard the papal flight, the Pope emphasized the importance of participating in the electoral process, saying, "not voting is ugly," and that believers "must vote."
“You must choose the lesser evil,” he stated. “Who is the lesser evil? That lady, or that gentleman? I don’t know. Whether it is the one who is chasing away migrants, or the one that kills children, both are against life.”
Trump has committed to sealing the southern US border and orchestrating the most extensive deportation initiative in the nation's history if he wins. On the other hand, Harris intends to enact legislation that would restore abortion rights as they were under the previously overturned Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling.
Roe v. Wade historically sanctioned a woman's liberty to obtain an abortion, though later laws imposed restrictions, such as prohibiting abortions after the second trimester of pregnancy. Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, authorized a bill in 2023 permitting abortions right up until birth.
Addressing the media, Pope Francis further stated, “To send migrants away, to leave them wherever you want, to leave them … it’s something terrible, there is evil there. To send away a child from the womb of the mother is an assassination, because there is life. We must speak about these things clearly.”
Pope Francis has unwaveringly condemned abortion in accordance with Catholic doctrine. Nonetheless, he has made it possible for priests to absolve the act of abortion and has encouraged bishops not to refuse communion to those politicians who back it.
The leader of the Catholic Church has also shown a more accommodating approach towards issues of immigration than his predecessors. He notably rebuked Trump’s idea to fortify the US/Mexico border during the 2016 presidential campaign, denouncing it as "not Christian," and in 2019, the Vatican contributed $500,000 to help 75,000 Central American migrants trying to reach the US through Mexico.
