North Korea's military has declared it will halt all road and railway connections with the South due to these military drills conducted by Seoul and US forces.
A statement from the general staff of the North Korean People’s Army, as reported by state media, indicated that the initiative to cut all transportation links with South Korea and “completely separate” the two territories commenced on October 9.
Moreover, Pyongyang stated it would “fortify the relevant areas of our side with strong defense structures,” according to the Korean Central News Agency.
The complete closure of the border with the South—characterized by Pyongyang as the “primary hostile state and invariable principal enemy”—is framed as a “self-defensive measure for inhibiting war and defending the security of the DPRK.”
The statement from North Korea highlighted that these “resolute” actions were taken in light of the “acute military situation” on the peninsula, citing recent military exercises by Seoul close to the North Korean border and the deployment of US strategic nuclear assets in the vicinity.
In addition, the North Korean military noted it had sent a communication to the US military in South Korea on Wednesday morning to prevent any “misjudgment and accidental conflict over the fortification project.”
Meanwhile, South Korea has stated that it has yet to observe any construction activities by North Korea near the border, but it affirmed that it “will not overlook” any actions by its neighbor that might “unilaterally change the status quo.”
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff have warned that any incidents resulting from the construction would be the responsibility of Pyongyang.
“In the event North Korea carries out a provocation, our military will overwhelmingly punish not only the source of the provocation but also the supporting and commanding forces based on a firm combined defense posture,” stated Seoul.
