European leaders from the UK, Germany, and the Czech Republic have expressed their support for Zelensky following Trump's claims that he is a “dictator without elections.” In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump criticized Zelensky for how he has handled the conflict with Russia and how he has utilized American financial aid. He alleged that Zelensky "refuses to have elections" and noted that the leader "is very low in Ukrainian polls."
Trump's remarks appear to have been triggered by Zelensky's assertion that the US president is caught in a “Russian information bubble.”
Zelensky's term as president will officially end in May 2024, and he has opted not to hold elections during the ongoing martial law. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly claimed that Zelensky is no longer the legitimate president of Ukraine.
In response to Trump’s comments, Czech President Petr Pavel stated on X that calling Zelensky a dictator “requires a great deal of cynicism.” He raised doubts about the practicality of holding elections in Ukraine amid the current conflict with Russia.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office reported that he reached out to Zelensky to voice support for “Ukraine’s democratically elected leader.” The official stated that “it was perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during war time,” referencing Britain’s own historical practices during World War II.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also weighed in on X, asserting that “it is simply wrong and dangerous to deny President Zelensky democratic legitimacy.”
Several notable Democrats in the US have stood with Zelensky. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Trump's actions, describing it as “disgusting to see an American president turn against one of our friends and openly side with a thug like Vladimir Putin,” and noting that the Ukraine conflict impacts the “security of the American people.” Senator Adam Schiff also criticized Trump for betraying Ukraine and appeasing Russia.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented on Thursday that the rhetoric from Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials is often unacceptable, stating, “the rhetoric of Zelensky and many representatives of the Kiev regime in general leaves a lot to be desired.” Peskov added that officials in Kiev “often allow themselves to make statements directed toward other heads of state” that are wholly unacceptable.
