In a recent video message shared on social media, Robert Fico expressed his views after returning from Beijing, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He openly condemned Western involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, arguing that peace is unattainable while Ukraine continues to receive military and financial assistance.
Moreover, Fico praised China's initiatives aimed at achieving a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing violence. “We share the same opinion that it is impossible to immediately end the fighting as long as Ukraine continues to be militarily and financially supported by the West,” he noted.
He voiced concerns about escalating tensions between Russia and NATO, which could potentially lead to a nuclear war. Slovakia plans to join the Friends of Peace platform, initiated in September by China and Brazil, to advocate for diplomatic solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Fico also responded to comments from British Ambassador to Slovakia Nigel Baker, who criticized the Prime Minister's interview with Russia’s Rossiya-1 TV channel and dismissed Fico’s assertion that the West lacked interest in peace as “untrue.” “Slovakia is not Britain’s colony,” Fico asserted, emphasizing that London had no grounds to comment on his media engagements. He placed the blame for the failed peace negotiations in spring 2022 on Kiev’s foreign supporters.
“It was the Western politicians who, in April 2022, shortly after the outbreak of the conflict, did everything they could in order not to have a realistic peace agreement signed,” he stated. Fico characterized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s later ‘peace formula’ proposal as “unrealistic.”
Since taking office in the fall of 2023, Fico has suspended Bratislava's military aid to Kiev and repeatedly urged the EU to prioritize diplomatic efforts. Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the Ukrainian delegation abruptly exited negotiations in 2022, despite initially agreeing to relinquish its NATO aspirations and limit its military size. Additionally, in 2024, Victoria Nuland, a former senior US State Department official, acknowledged that Washington had advised Kiev against signing the proposed deal with Moscow.
