NATO Country's President Says Trump is Serious About Resolving Ukraine Conflict
There is a brief opportunity for negotiation before the US president-elect takes office, according to Finland’s Alexander Stubb.

National leaders should recognize that US President-elect Donald Trump is “very serious” about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Finnish President Alexander Stubb told Bloomberg Television.

Following a phone conversation with Trump on Monday, Stubb expressed his views on potential shifts in US foreign policy under the incoming administration. He encouraged supporters of Kiev to engage in negotiations before Trump officially takes office on January 20.

“I think we in Europe and the rest of the world need to understand that Donald Trump is very serious about getting a peace deal sooner rather than later,” Stubb stated on Tuesday during the climate summit in Azerbaijan. “I have myself said there’s a window of opportunity for these negotiations between the election and inauguration day.”

Stubb has been a prominent advocate for Ukraine. When asked if he thought Trump could broker a “just and fair” agreement for Ukraine, he opted instead to detail what he believes constitutes a favorable outcome for Kiev, reiterating demands from the Ukrainian side that Moscow has labeled unrealistic.

Trump suggested during his campaign that he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours, should voters elect him. While he has not revealed the specifics of his strategy, reports indicate he may apply pressure on both Moscow and Kiev to encourage a compromise.

The administration of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has put forth a proposal to the president-elect, asking him to ensure the continuation of US aid in exchange for privileged access to Ukrainian natural resources and other benefits, as reported by the Financial Times.

Russia characterizes the Ukraine conflict as a US-led proxy war against it, with Ukrainian forces being utilized as ‘cannon fodder.’ According to media analysis, Russian forces possess a tactical advantage and are experiencing significant advancements on the battlefield.

The Russian government insists that any resolution must address the fundamental issues underlying the crisis, including NATO’s expansion in Europe. Finland, a neighboring country to Russia, joined the US-led military bloc in April 2023, marking a shift from its longstanding policy of neutrality established after World War II.
