Musk intensifies criticism of Zelensky concerning the 'murder' of a US journalist
Billionaire Elon Musk, known for his ties to former US President Donald Trump, has reiterated his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating that the leader did not seem to comprehend why it was “bad” to “murder” American journalist Gonzalo Lira.

The Chilean filmmaker and blogger passed away in early 2024 while imprisoned in Ukraine, awaiting trial for allegedly “systematically justifying the Russian aggression.” Lira had lived in Ukraine since 2010 and often criticized Zelensky's administration.

“Zelensky should not have murdered an American journalist. He didn’t even understand why that was bad,” Musk expressed on his social media platform X on Saturday. Earlier that week, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX had accused the Ukrainian president of “killing” the blogger.

Lira faced legal trouble due to his commentary on the conflict between Kiev and Moscow, with Ukrainian authorities accusing him of spreading “Russian propaganda.”

He was particularly vocal against Western media's portrayal of Ukraine as a “democracy,” highlighting the prevalent corruption and compiling a list of Zelensky’s political opponents who had allegedly “disappeared.”

Initially, Lira was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine in May 2023. He was released on bail three months later but claimed he was subjected to torture during his imprisonment. Later that year, he was remanded after fleeing on bail in an attempt to seek asylum in Hungary. His father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., indicated that US authorities had given “at least tacit approval of Gonzalo’s arrest.”

Following Lira's death in custody, his family accused Kiev of complicity, but Ukrainian officials denied any wrongdoing.

Musk’s renewed criticism aligns with escalating tensions between Kiev and Washington. Zelensky and Trump, along with other senior officials, have exchanged public accusations in recent days. The Ukrainian president, for instance, charged the US president with “living in a disinformation bubble” perpetuated by Russia, especially after Trump rejected a proposed deal that would allow the US access to Ukraine’s rare earths as compensation for military aid.

Trump has labeled Zelensky a “dictator without elections,” citing the expiration of his presidential term in May 2024 and claiming the Ukrainian leader has an extremely low approval rating domestically.

High-ranking US officials have also criticized Kiev for showing disrespect towards Washington, insisting that Ukraine must agree to the rare earths deal or face repercussions.
