Moscow Claims Zelensky Opted for Escalation
Ukraine’s military operation in Kursk has signaled a critical shift for those who believed that Kiev was pursuing peace, according to Russia’s deputy UN envoy.

Dmitry Polyansky, Moscow’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, remarked that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky opted for escalation by ordering an incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region. During his visit to the US, where he is set to meet with President Joe Biden, members of Congress, and both presidential contenders—Kamala Harris and Donald Trump—Zelensky is planning to present his recently rebranded ‘victory plan.’ He claims this proposal could resolve the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev by year’s end if the West acts swiftly to enhance support for Ukraine.

Polyansky elaborated to RIA Novosti news agency on Monday, stating that "Russian authorities judge what the others do by their actions, not by their words. This means that he [Zelensky] clearly chose the path of escalation when he invaded Russia’s Kursk Region." He further emphasized, “I think this was the best reply to everybody who hoped that the Ukrainian leadership was striving for peace.”

The Ukrainian military initiated its operation in the Kursk Region on August 6, marking the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since conflict erupted in February 2022. The Russian military quickly countered, claiming to have regained control over more than a dozen villages in recent weeks, though Ukrainian forces still hold parts of the region, and clashes continue.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Ukraine has sustained over 16,000 troop losses and significant equipment losses, including 126 tanks and 95 armored personnel carriers, since the incursion began.

Polyansky noted that Moscow is not privy to the details of Zelensky’s ‘victory plan’ and has not been invited for discussions regarding it. "It is hard for us to understand what is on the madman’s mind. We do not know what Zelensky is planning, and there is a lot of hype around him being here [in the US] and about what he will or will not offer,” he commented.

Moreover, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed on Sunday that “there is no alternative to our [Russian] victory.”
