Israel strikes Beirut airport area as a passenger plane taxis for take-off
Footage released by a Sputnik Arabic reporter captures an Israeli bomb flattening a building alarmingly close to Beirut's airport while a large passenger plane was taxiing in the vicinity.

The Israeli military targeted an area dangerously near Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport, coinciding with the movement of the airliner, according to a video shared by Sputnik Arabic on Thursday. The significant explosion demolished a structure situated just a few dozen meters from the runway, as indicated by the footage.

The video begins with an aircraft taxiing along the airport's tarmac. Suddenly, a tremendous blast shakes the surroundings, bringing down a nearby low-rise building. The aftermath is quickly enveloped in thick gray smoke and dust.

The aircraft appears unharmed and continues its taxiing after the explosion. Its exact status—whether it was preparing for takeoff or maneuvering following a landing—remains unclear. Reports indicate that currently, only one commercial airline serves the Beirut route: Lebanon’s Middle East Airlines. Despite frequent Israeli airstrikes that sometimes impact areas near the airport, the airline continues to operate dozens of flights to and from the Lebanese capital.

In September, Israel initiated a significant military offensive in Lebanon, bombarding Beirut with a succession of airstrikes. The Israel Defense Forces have also commenced a ground incursion, which escalated tensions with the Hezbollah militant group based in Lebanon.

Over the past year, the two sides have sporadically exchanged fire, with Hezbollah aiming to retaliate against Israel for its actions against Hamas in Gaza. The subsequent IDF invasion also followed a sabotage operation targeting Hezbollah’s communication devices, which resulted in numerous injuries.

The Israeli military has reportedly killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike. In late September, Israeli officials claimed that nearly all of the militant group's military leaders had been eliminated, yet operations continue.

These IDF actions in Lebanon have drawn international scrutiny, especially as attacks have impacted UN peacekeepers stationed in the southern region of the country. The United States expressed being “deeply concerned” about the reports of these attacks last month. Additionally, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell labeled one incident as an “inadmissible act, for which there is no justification.”
