This communication follows threats from West Jerusalem of a “harsh response” to a recent barrage of Iranian missiles, which Tehran has characterized as retaliation for the killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders by Israel.
An unnamed Iranian source informed Al Jazeera on Thursday that Tehran believes the “phase of unilateral self-restraint has ended,” arguing that it has not effectively protected the nation’s security interests. Although Iran is not seeking a regional war, any Israeli attack will be met with an “unconventional response,” including potential targeting of Israeli infrastructure, according to the Qatar-based network.
Additionally, the Iranian mission to the United Nations has issued a warning to other nations against assisting any Israeli military action against Iran.
“Our response will be solely directed at the aggressor. Should any country render assistance to the aggressor, it should likewise be deemed an accomplice and a legitimate target,” the mission stated. “We advise countries to refrain from entangling themselves in the conflict between the Israeli regime and Iran and to distance themselves from the fray.”
On Tuesday evening, Iran launched at least 180 missiles of various types toward Israel. While the Israel Defense Forces claim to have intercepted most, video footage revealed multiple strikes across Israel, causing damage to several military installations.
In a statement to the Security Council on Wednesday, Amir Saied Iravani, Iran’s envoy to the UN, described the missile launch as an act of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, asserting that Iran is “fully prepared to take further defensive measures if necessary.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused Israel on Wednesday of seeking to “cause insecurity and spread crisis in the region,” which Iran condemns, but he added that “any type of military attack, terrorist act or crossing our red lines will be met with a decisive response by our armed forces.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to “exact a heavy price from the ayatollahs’ regime,” according to Channel 12 in Tel Aviv. The “harsh response” from Israel is reportedly being coordinated closely with the United States and is anticipated to occur “within days,” the channel noted.
US President Joe Biden commented that discussions are underway with Israel regarding potential strikes on Iranian oil facilities.
