The IDF accused HRW of exhibiting “anti-Israel bias and factual distortion” following the NGO's assertion that Israel's intentional mass displacement of Palestinians in Gaza constitutes a “crime against humanity.” The 154-page report, released by the US-based organization on Thursday, outlines over 13 months of extensive destruction in Gaza, which the UN estimates has displaced approximately 1.9 million Palestinians—over 90% of the area’s population.
In response to the report, the IDF rejected the claims, stating it is “deeply misleading” and misrepresents the military’s “efforts to minimize civilian harm as tools for forcible displacement.” The HRW report included interviews with numerous displaced Palestinians and analyzed satellite images, along with the execution of 184 evacuation orders. The IDF maintained that the document reflects a “long-standing pattern of anti-Israel bias and factual distortion,” as reported by the Times of Israel.
While the IDF asserts that evacuation warnings were issued “in accordance with international law,” HRW found these warnings to be “inconsistent, inaccurate, and frequently not communicated to civilians with enough time to allow evacuations.” HRW refugee and migrant rights researcher Nadia Hardman remarked, “The Israeli government cannot claim to be keeping Palestinians safe when it kills them along escape routes, bombs so-called safe zones, and cuts off food, water, and sanitation.”
The IDF, however, contends that the report “selectively presents information in a manner that obscures context, as well as makes certain blatant misrepresentations.” HRW, which received $100 million from George Soros in 2010, further alleged that Israeli authorities have obstructed “all but a small fraction of the necessary humanitarian aid, water, electricity, and fuel from reaching civilians in need,” and have carried out attacks that have damaged essential resources like hospitals and bakeries.
In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that HRW's report was based on “Hamas-controlled sources,” emphasizing that “Israel’s efforts are directed solely at dismantling Hamas’ terror capabilities and not at the people of Gaza.”
Israel's military operations in Gaza commenced in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 individuals and the hostage-taking of 250 others. Since then, reports indicate that at least 43,000 people have been killed due to the subsequent intensive bombardments and ground invasion by the IDF.
