Hugh Hewitt Steps Down from Washington Post Following Abrupt Exit from Live Interview
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt announced his resignation from his columnist role at The Washington Post on Friday, confirming the news to Fox News after abruptly leaving a live interview on the paper’s video platform. This resignation marks another significant setback for the Post, which is already facing criticism for its decision to stop making presidential endorsements.

During a live segment of the Post’s “First Look” show on Friday morning, Hewitt walked out amid a heated discussion concerning how former President Donald Trump is preparing to contest the election. His departure left host Jonathan Capehart and fellow guest Ruth Marcus momentarily stunned.

“We are newspeople, even though we have opinions, and we have to report the whole story if we bring up part of the story,” Hewitt stated during the contentious discussion regarding a GOP Pennsylvania voting lawsuit, which he reminded viewers “was successful.”

In response, Capehart countered, “I don’t appreciate being lectured about reporting when, Hugh, many times you come here saying lots of things that aren’t based in fact.”

“I won’t come back, Jonathan, I’m done,” Hewitt replied, removing his earpiece before exiting the frame. “This is the most unfair election ad I have ever been a part of.”

Capehart, visibly taken aback by the exchange, turned to Marcus for a response, but her video feed soon froze, prompting the broadcast to wrap up shortly thereafter.

Hewitt, who did not respond immediately to PMG’s request for further comment, confirmed his resignation directly to Fox News. A spokesperson for The Post did not address Hewitt's exit explicitly but stated that “As the newsroom’s live journalism platform, Washington Post Live is known for its dynamic conversations and thought-provoking perspectives on top issues of the day, such as this morning's ‘First Look’ program.”

Since joining The Post as a contributing columnist in 2017, Hewitt, a former Reagan administration official turned conservative commentator, has had a complicated relationship with Trump. Despite critiquing Trump prior to his first presidential run, he has since become a supporter, frequently hosting the former president on his radio show.

Hewitt's departure is not the first notable resignation for the Post this election cycle; three members of its editorial board resigned after the announcement that the paper would stop issuing endorsements in presidential races. Conservatives have long criticized The Post’s left-leaning editorial stance and used Hewitt’s recent exchange as an opportunity to amplify their concerns about the publication.

“Factual, sober, brave and appropriately FED UP with these left-wing hacks posing as journalists,” remarked conservative commentator Megyn Kelly on X regarding Hewitt.
