House GOP Targets Walz
The House Oversight Committee has initiated an investigation into the vice presidential selection made by the Democrats.
On Friday, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) declared the launch of an inquiry into Walz’s involvement with China, including his coordination of student trips. He also sent a demand to FBI Director Christopher Wray for numerous documents and any communications concerning Walz and China.
“Americans should be deeply concerned that Governor Walz, Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential running mate, has a longstanding and cozy relationship with China. …The American people deserve to fully understand how deep Governor Walz’s relationship with China goes,” Comer stated.
Walz’s connections with China include his participation in a teaching program in China in 1989 and his role in organizing student visits to the country, where he has traveled over 30 times; Comer cited these facts when justifying the rationale for his probe.
Republicans are sharpening their attacks on Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris as they revise their campaign strategy for November. However, Walz has expressed criticism of China, especially concerning human rights issues. While serving in Congress, he was part of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, focusing on such matters.
“Throughout his career, Governor Walz has stood up to the CCP, fought for human rights … and democracy, and always put American jobs and manufacturing first. Republicans are twisting basic facts and desperately lying to distract from the Trump-Vance agenda: praising dictators, and sending American jobs to China,” said Teddy Tschann, a spokesperson for Walz.
A spokesperson for the Oversight Committee's Democrats described Comer’s probe as “nothing more than a political stunt to aid the former president, while he ignores Trump's cozy relationships with dictators, including China's Xi.”
Besides engaging in aggressive inquiries into Chinese-involved activities, Comer has also focused on political rivals using the platform of the influential House Oversight Committee. Comer, who stated to PMG he does not plan to call Harris in, has recently sought documents linked to her initiatives regarding the U.S.-Mexico border.
His most noteworthy investigative effort — co-leading an impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden, primarily over his family’s business dealings — has quietly concluded. Despite the investigation's duration, Republicans lack sufficient support to impeach Biden, with many unconvinced of Biden’s criminal involvement or impeachable conduct.
