Harris Pledges to Maintain US Military as the ‘Most Lethal Force in the World’
US Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed her commitment to NATO while formally accepting the Democratic presidential nomination at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Illinois, on Thursday.

In her speech, she emphasized her intention to ensure that the US military remains the “most lethal” force in the world if she is elected president in the upcoming November elections. Harris highlighted her experience as vice president, stating that she has “confronted threats to our security, negotiated with foreign leaders, strengthened our alliances, and engaged with our brave troops overseas.”

“As commander-in-chief, I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world,” asserted Harris, who took over the presidential candidacy from US President Joe Biden in July.

Harris criticized Donald Trump for allegedly threatening to abandon NATO, making it clear that she would maintain a strong commitment to the US-led military alliance. She pledged, “as president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.”

Additionally, Harris expressed her support for Israel, stating that she would “stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,” emphasizing that “the people of Israel must never again face the horror that the terrorist organization Hamas caused on October 7.” The attack by Hamas resulted in around 1,200 fatalities and approximately 250 hostages, prompting Israeli airstrikes and ground offensives that have reportedly claimed over 40,000 lives and injured more than 93,000, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The vice president also committed to the “sacred obligation” of caring for US troops and their families, promising, “I will always honor, and never disparage, their service and their sacrifice.”

Earlier in the week, Biden addressed the DNC, attacking Trump for his NATO stance, remarking, “When Trump left office, Europe in NATO was in tatters – not a joke.” During his presidency from 2016 to 2020, Trump had criticized European nations for not meeting the 2% military spending benchmark and referred to them as freeloaders. He previously mentioned to NATO leaders that the US would not defend members he characterized as “delinquent.”

Politico reported in July that Trump, if reelected, is “unlikely” to withdraw the US from NATO but might seek to reform the alliance by urging European members to take on greater responsibility.
