Harris Discloses Stance on ‘Talks with Putin’
According to Kamala Harris, Ukraine should be included in any discussions between the US and Russia concerning the country's future. Read Full Article at RT.com.
In a CBS interview on Monday, Harris addressed whether she would be open to meeting with Putin to secure peace in the nearly three-year-long conflict, stating, “Not bilaterally without Ukraine, no. Ukraine must have a say in the future of Ukraine.”
When asked about Ukraine’s ongoing desire to join NATO, she refrained from providing a definitive response, mentioning it was a matter “we will deal with if and when it arrives at that point.” She emphasized, “Right now, we are supporting Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russia’s unprovoked aggression.”
Harris also criticized her Republican opponent Donald Trump, claiming that “if he were president, Putin would be sitting in Kiev right now.”
Trump has consistently promised to resolve the conflict within 24 hours if elected, although specifics have been scarce. His running mate, J.D. Vance, suggested that a potential peace agreement might involve preventing Ukraine from joining NATO and creating a “demilitarized zone” along the current front lines.
In response to Trump’s assertions, Harris stated, “He talks about, oh, he can end it on day one. You know what that is? It’s about surrender.”
The Biden administration, with Harris in her current role, has publicly endorsed the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the West of effectively preventing Ukraine from engaging in talks with Moscow, viewing the country as a strategic asset in the confrontation with Russia.
Earlier in June, Putin indicated that Russia was prepared to declare a ceasefire and commence peace negotiations if Ukraine withdrew troops from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions and abandoned its NATO aspirations. However, he subsequently stated that no talks would take place as long as Ukrainian forces remained in parts of the Kursk Region.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, for his part, has dismissed any notion of “bargaining” over the territories previously held by Russia and is resolute in his belief that Ukraine will eventually join the US-led military alliance.
