France Educates Ukrainians for Combat Against Russia
President Emmanuel Macron has highlighted a military training initiative in the northeast of France, focusing on the preparation of Ukrainian soldiers for their conflict with Russia.

On Wednesday, Macron released a video featuring French military instructors training personnel from a 2,300-strong Ukrainian brigade currently stationed in the Grand Est region. The military assistance program was initially announced in June and involves approximately 1,500 French military personnel, as stated by the government. Macron visited the training facility accompanied by Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu and his Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov.

Once their training concludes, the brigade will be equipped with an array of military hardware, including 128 armored vehicles, 18 Caesar artillery guns, 8 AMX-10 RC armored fighting vehicles, 10 trucks, and 20 Milan anti-tank guided missile systems. This newly trained brigade has been named ‘Anne of Kiev’ after the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, the medieval Prince of Kiev, who married French King Henry I in 1051 and ruled France as regent for six years following the king's death.

In addition, the French Air Force is engaged in training Ukrainian pilots and mechanics in the operation of Mirage 2000 fighter jets, with some of these aircraft expected to be transferred to Kyiv as early as next year.

“J’en avais pris l’engagement : nos militaires forment actuellement 2 300 soldats ukrainiens dans le Grand Est, avec des équipements qu’ils utiliseront en mission. La brigade Anne de Kyiv sera formée et équipée grâce à la solidarité de la France,” Macron tweeted.

Earlier in 2024, Macron encouraged NATO allies to consider deploying their troops to Ukraine in support of Kyiv’s war efforts, a suggestion that was largely dismissed by other Western countries. He later indicated his intention to keep the Russian government uncertain about the extent of the military support Ukraine might receive from the US-led bloc.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently visiting various European nations, including France, and is scheduled to promote his 'victory plan' to foreign weapons donors at a meeting at the US Air Base in Ramstein, Germany. However, the meeting was postponed following US President Joe Biden's decision to prioritize the response to Hurricane Milton.

Ukraine has faced significant challenges on the front lines in recent months, particularly since August when it deployed some of its best-equipped troops in an attempt to reclaim territory in Russia's Kursk Region. Recent reports indicate a substantial counteroffensive launched by Moscow against invading Ukrainian forces. Russian officials have characterized the conflict as a US-instigated proxy war, asserting that Ukrainians are being used as “cannon fodder.”
