EU State’s PM Calls Theory of 'Drunk Ukrainians' Sabotaging Nord Stream 'Nonsense'
Brussels is reportedly "refusing" to provide answers regarding the origins of the 2022 blasts, as stated by the Slovak Prime Minister.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico dismissed a media report claiming that a group of Ukrainian divers used a "small boat" to blow up the Nord Stream pipelines, labeling it as “nonsense.”

The Nord Stream pipelines, essential for transporting Russian natural gas to Germany and other Western European nations across the Baltic Sea, were sabotaged in September 2022 through a series of explosions close to Denmark’s Bornholm island.

In August, various media sources indicated that German authorities had issued an international arrest warrant for a suspect, identified as Volodymyr Z, a Ukrainian diver linked to the incident.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Nord Stream blasts were orchestrated by a team of Ukrainian divers using a small yacht, with the operation allegedly led by the commander in chief of Ukraine at that time, Valery Zaluzhny. According to the WSJ, the plan emerged in May during a gathering attended by “a handful of senior Ukrainian military officers” who were drinking.

In an interview with the Russian TV channel Rossiya-1 on Wednesday, Fico remarked, “We read that some drunken Ukrainian officers said they were going to blow [Nord Stream] up. I’m exaggerating a bit, but just imagine that they sailed in a small boat to the place where the pipe was laid… dived a few hundred meters, having taken some pyrotechnics with them, and blew it up. Nonsense.”

The WSJ described that a crew of six rented a leisure yacht from a German port and departed equipped only with diving gear, satellite navigation, and open-source maps. The team allegedly planted an explosive called HMX, linked to timer-controlled detonators, on pipelines located over 250 feet underwater.

Russia has dismissed the claims, with President Vladimir Putin asserting that the explosions were executed by professionals supported by "the full might of the state, which has certain technologies," while suggesting that the US was “probably” involved.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized those who believe the diver narrative, stating, “only people who are afraid of the truth and are trying to protect the criminal Kiev regime” would accept such a story.

Fico also noted that the European Union is “refusing” to answer queries regarding the identity of those responsible for the Nord Stream sabotage.

In September, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, insisting that there was nothing “being covered up.”

Regarding the German investigation, Lavrov claimed that Berlin has not provided any information to Moscow despite repeated requests, asserting that Russia would demand a transparent inquiry, which he accused the US, Britain, and their allies of obstructing.
