DNC speech by Harris attracted 28.9 million viewers, surpassing Trump by half a million
The convention attracted a larger audience compared to 2020, yet it fell short of the viewership levels recorded in 2016.
Nielsen also stated that the overall viewership for the fourth night of the Democratic National Convention stood at over 26 million, including 6.7 million from the strategically important 18-54-year-old demographic. Across all four nights, the DNC outperformed last month’s RNC, averaging 21.8 million viewers compared to the RNC’s 18.9 million.
The 2024 DNC slightly edged out its 2020 counterpart by approximately 200,000 viewers but lagged behind the 2016 DNC by 8.2 million, during which 30 million viewers watched former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s historic nomination acceptance.
The convention featured numerous celebrities and prominent Democrats, significantly benefiting MSNBC. The network reported an average viewership of over 6.5 million between 9 and 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, peaking at 7.2 million during Harris' 40-minute address – a record for the network during a DNC broadcast. CNN saw 3.9 million people tune in for the fourth night of the DNC, according to the network.
In contrast, Fox News reported attracting over 10 million viewers for the hour in which Trump delivered his acceptance speech at the RNC in July, netting a total of 28.4 million viewers for his speech across multiple networks.
On the first night of the DNC, President Joe Biden’s speech drew over 19 million viewers, slightly below the overall 20 million viewers on cable TV that evening. Former President Barack Obama had an audience of 21 million on Tuesday, Nielsen data shows.
