China, Switzerland Begin Negotiations to Upgrade Free Trade Agreement
On Monday, China and Switzerland commenced negotiations to upgrade the Sino-Swiss free trade agreement. Both nations agreed to enhance consultations and aim for a high-level upgrade agreement soon, based on mutual benefits.

In a statement, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce noted that the announcement of the talks was made through a livestream by Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and Guy Parmelin, the Swiss federal councilor and head of the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research.

Wang remarked that since its implementation a decade ago, the Sino-Swiss FTA has positively contributed to the growth of bilateral trade, with businesses in both countries reaping substantial benefits.

He emphasized that upgrading the FTA would expand bilateral trade, increase two-way investment, and enhance economic and trade cooperation between China and Switzerland. Additionally, he pointed out that this move demonstrates both nations' commitment to free trade and openness, especially during a time when economic globalization faces significant challenges.

Parmelin added that amid rising trade protectionism worldwide, the initiation of FTA upgrade negotiations is highly significant. He stressed that it reflects the commitment of both countries to fostering an open and standardized environment for international economic and trade cooperation, sending a positive message to the world about their intent to deepen collaboration.

The Sino-Swiss FTA was signed in July 2013 and became effective in July 2014.
