China Earmarks Funds for Disaster Relief Efforts
The Chinese ministries of finance and emergency management have provided 260 million yuan to aid local governments in their disaster relief activities.
The funds will be allocated to east China's Jiangsu Province, east China's Shandong Province, central China's Henan Province, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, southwest China's Sichuan Province, and northwest China's Shaanxi Province. These resources will support emergency response activities such as search and rescue operations, relocating and resettling affected individuals, preventing hidden dangers and secondary disasters, and repairing damaged houses, as stated by the Ministry of Finance on Saturday.
Heavy rainfall has caused flash flooding, landslides, and mudflows across various regions in China, leading to traffic disruptions and forced evacuations.
During the peak flood season from late July to early August, China experiences significant rainfall and typhoons, which increase water levels and threaten communities along rivers, near lakes, and along coastlines.
Forecasts indicate that all seven major river basins in China may face flooding during this period. The country may also see typhoons moving north into inland regions, alongside a higher frequency of intense and extreme weather events.
A highway bridge collapse due to torrential rains in Shaanxi Province on Friday evening resulted in 12 fatalities and 31 people missing. In Sichuan, over 30 individuals remained missing after flash floods hit a village in Ya'an City early Saturday morning, according to local authorities.
