A resolution passed on Friday describes this diplomatic break as a reaction to “the brutal genocide that the fascist and war criminal government of Israel continues to commit against the Palestinian people.”
President Daniel Ortega has directed the Foreign Ministry to “abide” by the parliament’s resolution and sever relations with Israel, as stated by Vice President Rosario Murillo.
The lawmakers expressed that Israel's ongoing conflict in Gaza has affected neighboring countries, such as Lebanon and Syria, and poses a risk of escalating into direct conflict with Iran. The statement reflects Nicaragua's solidarity with Palestinians and their fight for freedom and self-determination.
In their declaration, the Nicaraguan legislators underscored their respect for the Israeli citizens advocating for an end to the violence, denouncing the Israeli government as “an enemy of humanity, which intends to spread its barbarism throughout the Middle East, endangering world peace and security.”
Israel initiated its military operation in Gaza last year in response to Hamas militants breaching the border, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,100 Israelis and the taking of over 200 hostages. The subsequent bombing and ground operations by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have devastated significant portions of the enclave, leading to more than 42,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

In addition, Israeli officials have been vocally advocating for extensive retaliatory strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and oil infrastructure, following Tehran’s response to the killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders with a missile barrage aimed at Israel on October 1.
