Argentina calls on ICC to mandate Maduro's arrest
Argentina has urged the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and other key figures, due to alleged violations of human rights after recent elections.

The Argentinian Foreign Ministry stated on Friday that the measures implemented by Maduro's government following the July 28 election "constitute crimes against humanity." They plan to formally request this action from the court on the upcoming Monday.

The National Electoral Council of Venezuela reported that Maduro secured a win in the July presidential elections with 52% of the votes. However, the results have been disputed by the Western-supported opposition, which claims the election was manipulated. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez asserted that he garnered 67% of the vote.

The announcement of the election results triggered widespread protests, which Maduro described as an attempted “coup against Venezuela,” resulting in the arrest of over 2,000 protestors. A criminal inquiry has also been initiated against opposition leaders Gonzalez and Maria Corina Machado for urging the military to withdraw support from Maduro.

Following Maduro's disputed re-election, multiple countries including Russia and China congratulated him. Conversely, the US, the EU, and several other nations, including Argentina, have declined to recognize his presidency.

This political strife led to a sharp exchange, with Maduro labeling Argentinian President Javier Milei as "monster face," in response to Milei calling him a dictator and demanding his departure. Following the contentious election, Venezuela shut down Argentina's diplomatic mission and called back its personnel from Buenos Aires.

In response to the ongoing dispute, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized Milei for neglecting domestic issues in his own nation.

“Looks like Argentina has no problems of its own, and President Milei has already put all his campaign promises into practice?” she remarked.

Argentina, the third largest economy in Latin America, is currently facing a deep economic crisis, with continued debt accumulation and financial mismanagement over many years. Recent figures from the Social Debt Observatory of the Catholic University of Argentina indicate that approximately 55% of Argentinians are living below the poverty threshold, a significant increase from 49.5% when Milei took office in December 2023. Currently, the country is experiencing one of the highest inflation rates globally, having soared beyond 260% in the past year. The government has also devalued the peso by over 50% as part of President Milei's aggressive economic reforms.
