Musk, who is known for his roles at SpaceX, Tesla, and X, sparked significant controversy when he raised his straightened right arm during a speech at Trump’s inauguration. This gesture prompted humor from some, while others accused him of performing a Nazi salute.
In response to the backlash, Musk blamed “radical leftists.” On Thursday, he shared a satirical post on X that included references to notorious leaders of Nazi Germany. He wrote, “Don’t say Hess to Nazi accusations! Some people will Goebbels anything down! Stop Goering your enemies! His pronouns would’ve been He/Himmler! Bet you did nazi that coming.”
In a comment on Musk’s post, podcaster Dave Rubin remarked: “Humor is the fascist way to defeat these people!” Musk responded, saying, “They can’t stand being mocked.”
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) quickly issued a condemnation of Musk’s remarks. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt stated on X, “We’ve said it hundreds of times before and we will say it again: the Holocaust was a singularly evil event, and it is inappropriate and offensive to make light of it.”
The ADL further stated, “making inappropriate and highly offensive jokes that trivialize the Holocaust only serve to minimize the evil and inhumanity of Nazi crimes, denigrate the suffering of both victims and survivors and insult the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Shoah.”
Previously, the Jewish advocacy group had defended Musk, suggesting his gesture was an “awkward moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also come to Musk’s defense, calling him “a great friend of Israel” who is being “falsely smeared.”
Musk visited Israel shortly after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which escalated into the ongoing war in Gaza. In January 2024, he laid a wreath at the site of the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland and participated in a memorial service, according to reports from the BBC.
