According to Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, the Ukrainian government has decided to cancel a planned meeting that would have included Vladimir Zelensky and leaders from Latin America, fearing it could turn into a public relations disaster. The report noted that very few invitees had confirmed their attendance.
Initially, the meeting was set to occur alongside the UN General Assembly on September 24, with the intention of illustrating symbolic support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Moscow.
Ukrainian officials believed it would serve as “an appropriate platform” for Zelensky to share what they referred to as “relevant and reliable information” regarding the conflict. Additionally, Kiev aimed to bolster support for the so-called Zelensky ‘peace formula’—a set of demands established by Ukraine as conditions for peace talks. These demands have been dismissed by Moscow as unacceptable.
Folha reported that the meeting was called off following the reception of only a “few confirmations of attendance.” The Ukrainian government reportedly deemed it “necessary to avoid a situation that could possibly be interpreted as a lack of support.” The publication did not disclose the number of confirmations or identify the attending leaders, aside from Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo.
Since the onset of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, Ukraine has received consistent backing from the West, but it has struggled to secure support in other regions. Several countries in Asia, Africa, and South America, including China, India, and Brazil, have maintained a neutral stance and advocated for a diplomatic resolution.
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's president-elect, recently informed reporters that she aims to follow a policy of non-intervention on the global stage and has no intention of visiting Ukraine. “Searching for the peaceful resolution of conflicts is the cornerstone of our foreign policy. This is our policy, and it won’t change,” she stated on Wednesday.
Kiev has consistently rejected any proposals that deviate from the ‘Zelensky formula,’ asserting that such alternatives benefit Moscow. Last week, Zelensky turned down a six-point roadmap suggested by China and Brazil. In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed that he wouldn’t permit his country to be embroiled in the conflict.
