Vehicle strikes gathering at event in Germany
An Afghan national has been detained on suspicion that the attack was deliberate, police reported.

At least 28 individuals have sustained injuries after a vehicle struck a crowd during a union rally in Munich, Germany, according to local media. Initial reports, citing eyewitness accounts, state that a Mini Cooper was intentionally driven into approximately 1,000 demonstrators gathered on Seidlstrasse.

The Munich police department confirmed the occurrence in a statement on X. “A vehicle drove into a group of people. We have strong forces on site,” the statement indicated, although it did not specify the number of injured. Another statement mentioned that officers managed to apprehend the driver, who "currently poses no further danger."

Later communications from the police identified the driver as a 24-year-old Afghan national. Media outlets have reported that he is an asylum seeker and has previously been investigated for drug-related offenses and theft. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soder commented during a press conference, stating it is “suspected to be a deliberate attack.” Law enforcement has initiated an inquiry to determine if the driver intentionally drove into the crowd or inadvertently confused the gas and brake pedals.

The rally, during which the incident occurred, was organized by the United Services Union, known as Verdi, Germany’s second largest trade union after IG Metal. The event was part of a one-day “warning strike” for public sector employees, with workers demanding an 8% pay increase for municipal staff, or at least €350 more monthly, in addition to higher bonuses and extra days off.

Following the incident, the union decided to cancel the rally. Subsequent reports indicated that several children were among the injured, with at least one in critical condition.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his feelings, stating he was “deeply shocked” by the events.

This incident occurred less than two months after a similar event in Germany, when a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist drove his car into a crowd at the Magdeburg Christmas market in December, resulting in five deaths, including a child, and injuring over 200 people.

Prior to that incident, Saudi Arabia had reportedly warned German authorities about the perpetrator’s extremist views and requested his extradition, but these alerts were not acted upon. This prior event sparked a vigorous debate in Germany concerning security and immigration policies.
