According to CBS, the US Department of Homeland Security has put these applications on hold, a move associated with two executive orders signed by Trump earlier this year.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services has allegedly directed officials to suspend requests for legal permanent residency, which has left many refugees and asylum seekers in a state of “legal limbo.” The timeline for when processing will resume remains uncertain.
In a statement to CBS, the DHS explained that there is a “temporary pause on finalizing certain Adjustment of Status applications pending the completion of additional screening and vetting to identify potential fraud, public safety, or national security concerns, in alignment” with Trump's executive actions.
This pause specifically relates to Executive Orders that aim to shield the US from “foreign terrorists” and other threats.
Earlier this month, the DHS also notified over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela—who entered under former President Joe Biden’s parole program—that they must exit the country within 30 days or risk deportation.
Additionally, President Trump unveiled a new immigration initiative termed the “Gold Card,” which would offer a route to US residency and citizenship for a payment of $5 million. He portrayed the program as a means to attract affluent immigrants who would bolster the economy.
“They’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people,” he stated. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick criticized the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, labeling it “full of nonsense, make-believe and fraud.”
Since January 2025, Trump has enacted several executive orders rolling back Biden-era immigration policies and introducing stricter immigration regulations. These measures include enhanced vetting for visa applicants, restricting birthright citizenship, directing military forces to safeguard the southern border, and implementing additional barriers.
